Innovation

Arjowiggins has a long history, but we have never let time stand still. Far from remaining a traditional paper manufacturer, we are a company with a relentless focus on what can be achieved with cutting-edge technology. Through a strategy of constant innovation, Arjowiggins is at the heart of technological evolutions and is able to develop new added-value and environmentally-friendly products and solutions that meet our clients’ individual needs.

Research and development

Arjowiggins’ R&D programme is led by our central team in Voiron, in the south of France, which conducts research at its own facilities and in collaboration with R&D teams at Arjowiggins mills. It is the teamwork and cooperation between R&D, mills and marketing that has unlocked the creation of unique, patented products and ranges, such as Curious Matter or Soft Touch, as well as technical products such as PowerCoat for printed electronics or Sylvicta which offers a sustainable alternative to plastics for food packaging.

Our engineers and scientists continuously explore new processes, technologies and ideas, and the products of their research and development keep the creative and technical possibilities of paper alive and flourishing.

A history of innovation

As a business, Arjowiggins is genetically programmed to explore, innovate and improve. Our drive to develop original, high added-value creative and technical paper products goes back a long way.

1800s: Created the fine papers business

1938: Launched the Gateway translucent paper brand that would become a world-leader

1990s: First to launch recycled fine papers in Conqueror, and to bring metallic papers onto the market

Late 1990s: Launch of our Digital range, for digital printers

2000: Launched Curious Collection, a suite of our most innovative products

2002: The launch of Soft Touch

2008: Conqueror 100% Recycled was launched, with high whiteness and cleanliness

2010: The launch of Conqueror Bamboo

2012: Our smart paper brand, Powercoat, was launched

2013: Curious Matter entered the market

2018: The launch of Curious Alchemy

2020: The launch of Sylvicta, a food-contact barrier paper to replace plastics in packaging

Collaboration and partnerships

Collaboration is vital to our innovation process. Our R&D centre at Voiron has established strategic partnerships with French institutions and centres of excellence, such as the International School of Paper (INP–Pagora), the Center for Atomic and Alternative Energy (CEA Liten), and the postgraduate school of electronics at INP–Phelma. The aim is to constantly improve our processes and manufacturing performance, remain alert to new technological trends, and adapt our products to emerging needs.

Arjowiggins is also member of prestigious collaborative research programmes such as:

EIT RawMaterials (European Institute of Technology & Innovation) eitrawmaterials.eu

AFELIM (French Association for Printed Electronics)
afelim.fr

Our current collaborative projects include:

• SUPERSMART (EIT): With a range of research institutes across Europe, Arjowiggins is developing materials to better enable the direct printing on paper of sensors, displays and electronics, and improve the recyclability of smart products.
supersmart-project.eu

• INNPAPER (H2020): INNPAPER is developing an electronic platform for the food, medical and security sectors that uses paper as a base material for integrating basic electronic items such as batteries, near-field communication (NFC) systems and displays.
innpaper.eu

• MADRAS (H2020): This project is developing new, high-speed manufacturing methods for organic printed electronics of the kind used in rollable handheld displays and organic photovoltaics.

Mills

Within our mills lies our craft. Since the 17th century, we have mastered the skills of making high quality papers, from fine paper to security paper, and more recently smart papers for printed electronics. Creating a sheet with lasting perfection takes precision. We rely on the knowledge, skill and experience of our people coupled with cutting-edge equipment to produce the world’s most diverse collection of unique papers.

Arjowiggins’ mills are located in Europe (Stoneywood in Scotland, Chartham in England, Guarro Casas in Spain) and in China (Quzhou). They all abide by the highest standards in terms of safety, quality and respect to the environment.

Sustainability

As a paper manufacturer, Arjowiggins is dedicated to protecting and respecting the environment. We have made it our mission to preserve valuable resources and to minimise the energy consumption and emissions of our mills.

We believe in sustainable development. To that end, we are constantly ensuring that our operations are in full compliance with all national and local laws related to the environment. Consideration of environmental issues and more particularly the reduction of pollution forms an integral part of our business decisions and activities, and is built into our production processes.

Arjowiggins has always been at the forefront of environmental initiatives in the paper industry and was an early adopter of environmental regulations and standards.

  • Stoneywood Mill was one of the first paper mills to achieve ISO 14001 certification in the 1980s.
  • In the 1990s, the construction of a thermal and power plant at Stoneywood reduced carbon dioxide emissions by 50,000 tonnes per year. The plant generated all the energy and steam needed to run the mill’s production lines. This investment was in addition to the efforts made since the 1960s to improve the mill’s effluent treatment.
  • In 1991, Conqueror entered the recycled paper market with premium recycled grades, followed in 2008 by the launch of 100% recycled options.
  • In 2008, Arjowiggins was one of the first papermakers to achieve FSC certification for its entire portfolio of creative papers.
  • In 2020, Arjowiggins launches Sylvicta, a food contact paper with high barrier properties, fully recyclable, compostable and biodegradable, ready for manufacturing sustainable packaging applications across the food and cosmetic industries.

Certifications

ISO 9001, 14001 and 50001 certified

All of our mills are ISO 9001 (quality standard) and 14001-certified (environmental standard).
Our Stoneywood Mill is ISO 50001-certified (energy standard) and ESOS compliant.

Fully FSC™-certified (Forestry Stewardship Council)

All of our products are made of materials from well-managed, FSC-certified forests and other controlled sources. This guarantees that pulp is sourced from well-managed forests and a socially responsible chain of production, from seedling to paper. Chain of custody certification from forest to end-user ensures that FSC materials and products have been checked at every stage of processing.

PEFC (Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification)

PEFC seeks to transform the way forests are managed globally – and locally – to ensure that all of us can enjoy the environmental, social, and economic benefits that forests offer.
Our Stoneywood Mill and Chartham Mill are PEFC-certified and can provide PEFC certificates for bespoke products (subject to MOQ).

Recycled papers

Our recycled papers are certified post-consumer waste under our FSC certification. We produce high-quality recycled grades using premium post-consumer waste pulp to preserve the properties of our creative and specialist papers. A careful selection of waste and specific de-inking processes ensure the cleanliness of the pulp and its excellent printability.

REACH and RoHS-compliant

All Arjowiggins’ mills comply with the REACH European regulation which covers registration, evaluation, authorisation and restriction processes for chemical substances and risk of hazardous substances.

Stoneywood Mill, which manufactures our PowerCoat smart paper range, is RoHS Kitemark-compliant.
The EU directive for the Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment, known as RoHS, is designed to protect human health and the environment, and is linked to the directive on the disposal of electrical and electronic waste. It controls the use of certain hazardous substances – including metals and manufactured chemicals (Restrictions of Hazardous Substances)

ECF (Elemental Chlorine Free)

All our papers are ECF. Our production processes do not use elemental chlorine gas during the bleaching process, preventing the formation of dioxins, dioxin-like compounds and carcinogens.

Carbon Neutral

Conqueror, our leading fine paper, is certified carbon neutral in 15 countries: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Iceland, Luxemburg, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, the UK and Eire. We aim at reducing our carbon emissions and offsetting emissions which cannot be reduced by investing in tree-planting programmes and clean energy projects.

Stoneywood Mill

Aberdeen, Scotland

Stoneywood Mill, on the banks of the River Don near Aberdeen, Scotland, was built in 1770 by James Moir who owned the estate at that time. The mill started the production of paper three years later. In 1800, it was acquired by Alexander Pirie who switched production from brown paper to fine papers. Two years later the mill produced its first watermarked paper. Over the following decades the mill built an international reputation for high-quality papers, and by the late 1800s, its products were sold in most countries around the world.

Today, Stoneywood Mill continues to produce world-leading fine paper brands such as Conqueror, Curious Collection, Keaykolour and Delos for graphic and packaging applications. It has also diversified into producing casting papers, security papers and more recently, smart papers for printed electronics.
